No?  Then read on if you would like to take photos of people from different eras of history…

HistoryAlive-11

History Alive is an annual event run by the Queensland Living
History Federation.  It is held at Fort Lytton, Brisbane on the second weekend in June each year, and various battle re-enactments and activities are staged over the weekend.  There are also encampments set up throughout the site covering several different eras of historical life over a 2000 year span.  You will be able to see everything from Roman Legionnaires to Medieval Knights to World War 1 & 2 displays.  All the various re-enactors are dressed in clothing and uniforms of their era, and there are also cannons, tanks, and other war vehicles and equipment on display.

From a photography perspective, you can capture images covering everything from Portraits to Action.  A short zoom of 15-85 will cover the portrait and wider scapes images, and a longer zoom of 100-400 will get you closer into the action of the re-enacted battle action and war conflicts.  Make sure you take your flashgun as there are shady areas around too, and there are endless possibilities for portraits, so a flash for fill-in light is essential.  I often use Shutter-Priority for the battle re-enactments to be able to freeze the moments of impact, and there is lots of that!

There is also lots of different weapons and equipment from all these various historical eras, and these also present great photo opportunities, as you just don’t come across these sorts of subjects everyday!  There are also various activities on offer ranging from re-creations of daily life through to firing of cannons and rifles and actual battles.  Re-enactors are also on hand to explain the history behind the different activities, and these are very entertaining.  You will learn a lot from them as well!
